Macha Méril naît de l'union de Marie Belsky et d'un prince russe, Wladimir Gagarine en 1940. Orpheline de son père, elle s'installe en France pour continuer ses études de lettres de Paris, qu'elle interrompt pour se consacrer à une carrière de comédienne en entrant au cours de Charles Dullin.

Elle est ensuite élève à l'Actors Studio à New York entre 1960 et 1962.
Mariée au réalisateur et producteur de cinéma italien Gian Vittorio Baldi en 1959, elle s'installe à Rome et tourne dans plusieurs films italiens.
En 2005, elle reçoit le Prix Reconnaissance des cinéphiles décerné à Puget-Théniers (Alpes-Maritimes) par l'Association Souvenance de cinéphiles pour l'ensemble de sa carrière.
Depuis 2006, Macha Méril s'associe avec l'enseigne de vente à distance Daxon et propose chaque saison une sélection de vêtements de prêt à porter.
Elle est sociétaire de l'émission Les Grosses Têtes.
